Pole Dance: Writing and Learning a Sequence of Moves
For right now, this video is not about pole technique. A month ago I wrote down a sequence of moves on PAPER, without doing them. Then I decided to try to memorise and learn them on the pole as a choreographed sequence. I don’t know anything about dance or choreography. I just wanted to see if I could do it. This video is about 1/4 or 1/3rd of the routine.
I haven’t made any progress at all on this because I got pretty distracted with getting ready for USPDF in New York. ANd since getting back, I’ve only poled once or twice!
USPDF was a blast! It was the most fun I have had in a VERY long time.
The Music is Bob Marley and the Wailers’ “Another Dance” and Shakira’s “En tus Pupillas” ( “In your Eyes”)

@poleyeti Thank you, Poleyeti!!!
@Hoddska Thanks, …
@Hoddska Thanks, Alex. Yes, USPDF was very inspirational–really, the most exciting weekend of my life since getting married 25 years ago in terms of sheer intensity of activity. I never really understood this idea of “physical intelligence”–it comes so late to me in life–the idea that the physical body has it’s own way of learning and problem solving that is different from the “reading and writing” brain. I want to at least TRY to learn how to do this!
@thatlarawoman …
@thatlarawoman Thank you, Lara…well I’ve got a long way to go to succeed in this idea, but I’m going to try. ..and I’ve still got your iguana tutorial to work on. I got a few more tips on that one in New York and I have been working on shoulder stretches to make it a little easier.
i agree with alex, …
i agree with alex, your second run through was smoother. and im in awe of your elbow grip aysha,great job joel. im looking forward to seeing the rest of the routine xx
the second run …
the second run through had a nice sflow to it, I am excited to seethe ongoing progress! I bet there’s a lot of new pole info in your brain from USPDF that will pop up in unexpected ways…as you process it all…interesting
Hey Joel, you are …
Hey Joel, you are looking strong, enjoying watching your progress. x
@simnonin Thanks, …
@simnonin Thanks, Sim. Yes, I had this idea to see if I could do this “mentally”–since I have a “no dance” brain I am not used to memorising something so abstract and “spatial.” I had the moves on a post-it note on the steering wheel of my car for a while. I’m going to work on the next segment in April. I really got off my practice pattern in MArch…it was very busy and chaotic this month!
@StudioVeena Yes, I …
@StudioVeena Yes, I remember you telling me in Minnesota to experiment with taking the other leg off first from the way I was doing it. I need to just practice the Aysha over and over for a while to figure that out so it is automatic. And I need to stop eating all these chips–because that Caterpillar is getting much harder!
@Lorenzia777 Thank …
@Lorenzia777 Thank You, Gabrielle!
@aretamarie Thank …
@aretamarie Thank You! All in all, if I can do this…I have to learn a sequence of 19 moves I wrote down. I may change a few…but I’m curious to see if I can do it.
Joel ***** for you …
Joel ***** for you great job gabrielle:=) :=)
Well done!!!! Try …
Well done!!!! Try to take your hooked back leg off the pole LAST for the aysha, like you did in the 2nd try. You can use that leg to steady yourself then…..don’t rush! You will have this routine down in no time Joel, I know it.
NICE control on …
NICE control on that aerial invert! It’s a pretty good series of moves, nice going! You don’t have to know anything about choreo to make up a good one, sometimes errors bring some wonderful new ideas but it is satisfying to get something down you’ve had playing in your imagination, good luck with the rest, can’t wait to see it sometime in April…
Nice work Joel! …
Nice work Joel! It’s looking pretty smooth! I’d say you definitely -can- do it! I think I may try this as well- I have a little semi list, but I haven’t actually thought also of the transitions between moves.. just “I think I’ll do these moves in a dance”.
