You are right to be weary of just leaving for Hollywood. The average Screen Actors Guild union member actor earns less than $5,000 per year in the business. You might not be waiting tables but you will be working a regular job for some time to come while you build your career.
References :
The first thing you need is experience. Audition for plays at your college and join the drama club. You should also try out for local community theatre shows; that's where many great actors got their starts. Take as many acting classes as possible. Read some books on acting (those by Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, Kristen Linklater and Jack Poggi are great). Be sure to get the support of your parents, family, friends and colleagues they can help you a lot.
If you feel you are ready, look up auditions on http://www.actorsaccess.com/index.cfm?fl…
http://www.backstage.com/bso/index.jsp
http://actinginfo.blogspot.com/
All three websites are reputable, legitimate and free. You generally need a head shot and resume (this website has great information on creating a resume http://www.bestsampleresume.com/acting-r… When you have enough experience you should begin to look for an agent. Look up agents on the SAG website.
References :
How should I break into an Acting career?
I know this question has been asked a hundred times but here comes another...
I'm a guy, 19, and going to college. I'm not really happy with what I'm doing here but also don't have the balls to say "f*ck it I'm going to Hollywood". That's what most do, and Im not interested in becoming a waiter.
I am studying engineering and every now and then go to the acting school to do a general audition for all upcoming student films. After the audition they say I did great and if I have any experience (but who knows if they don't ask that everyone). Its one of the best Film Schools in the nations so yeah... I never got a role. I cant say if its because I'm bad, but watching some of their films its seems like they're looking for every age group except the college age. And I'm not really dissapointed of not getting a role. Right now I'm happy I'm at least getting the courage to go audition infront of ten people and a video camera.

If anyone from the business is actually checking Y! Answers, do you have any advice?
I actually plan on spending a month or two during the summer in CA and was going to check out the whole process there. I'm just thinking, I'm 19. How much longer do I have to make it? (I know I know M. Freeman made it with 50 but thats not what I want)
