this blog was written by bob beckstead about me venturing into the woods of the massena forum group telling people to use real names.
As I did the latest remodeling on this blog, I decided to add a discussion forum that you can find here.
But I did it with a lot of trepidation….
In my journeys around the Internet, Ive seen too many discussion boards that have topics and talks that border on libel and defamation and slander – if theyre not already in that neck of the woods.
Its because they allow anonymous postings in which the individual – or in many cases the chicken – doesnt have to post his or her name, but can spout off all he or she wants without any fear of repercussion.
One of our local newspapers, North Country This Week, has a Soundoff column on its website. Thats where Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous can get things off their chest without having to use their real name – but at least the staff recognizes whats in good taste and whats not.
Still, the paper also has a letters section and I wonder how many of those anonymous commenters in the Soundoff column would be willing to put their name to a letter.
None of them, methinks.
And I always marvel at the discussion forums on Topix.com. Not only can the posters remain anonymous, they can change their damned name every time they post.
It seems like theres no moderation on that website at all, and as a result, we have topics like Scott Kimble – - – Rumor has it the SCUMBAG finally got sentenced!!!!!
Now if I was Scott Kimble, Id have a real problem with that – and Id be suing Topix.com for allowing that post to stand and issuing a subpoena for their records to find out who the posters were on that thread and Id sue their too.
I have no problem with discussion forums, but I really take an exception to those who allow total anonymity without fear of repercussion.
We receive unsigned letters at our newspaper that slam people and the authors dont have the balls to put their names to the letter. In the trash can they go. We dont accepted unsigned, unverified letters.
Perhaps some of these sites – like Topix – should have a more rigid registration process in which those who want to comment must sign up and Topix reserves the right to delete any posts they feel are inflammatory.
Thats how itll be on my message board – if anyone ever posts. Im not going to put up with that shit.
I dont hide behind the cloak of anonymity. People who visit this site simply need to click on the Bobs World link and theyll find out all about me. Nothing mysterious.
While I choose to make myself public, I can understand that not everybody is that way. I allow comments on my postings from people I dont know as long as they stay within the bounds of good taste. Otherwise, I dont care who they are or where theyre from, as long as they have something constructive to say.
Thank God for people like a friend here in Massena, John D. Michaud III. Somebody – big surprise – slammed him on Topix and he learned about it and, while he said he laughed about it, Id be steaming if it was me.
John may be the only person who has the balls to put his name – his real name – to the postings on Topix. Bravo.

First of all, please excuse the crappy job I did on this rush job video. I just wanted to get something up there quickly.
Basically, a top Nintendo website’s forums that I frequent every day have started to become less active. It’s been brought up that we should advertise the place a bit more, and I thought I’d try to do my part. I thought that making a video might catch the attention of some of you and get you to check it out and hopefully join the forums.
Don’t get me wrong – the forums are pretty active. It’s just that activity has decreased a bit and we’d love some fresh faces and more discussions. There’s a lack of good quality topics in there that perhaps create intelligent debates, and we miss that. It doesn’t have to be about Nintendo – we’re open to any game, any system, any topic about anything in general.
If you like the look of the site, please join the forums and introduce yourself! Then get in there and post away! I’d love to see more intellectual people on C3′s forums. It’s a brilliant site that I use as my number one source for Nintendo news. If you know anyone that might want to join, then please pass the website on to them!
