In case you’re not familiar with forums, a forum is simply an online discussion site where like-minded individuals gather to discuss subjects dealing within or around topic categories in the forum.
What’s great about forums is the fact that there’s a forum for every interest under the sun. And whether you’re interested in accounting, beauty, business or pets, chances are there’s a forum for it.
So how does posting on forums bring free traffic to your website?
Well, at the end of each forum post you’re allowed to include a signature (a small blurb or advertisement) about your website. Forum members (and visitors) who read your post will click on the link in your signature if it’s interesting enough.
And voila …free traffic!
Does it work?
Well, since most of my traffic comes from forums as well as the articles I write, if you’ve ever visited my Fundamental Marketing Blog, chances are better than 50/50 that you arrived there via a forum post I wrote.
So how do you go about finding a forum whose subject matter focuses on your interests?
Easy. Just visit your favorite search engine, and type in a subject you’re interested in followed by the word “forums.” For example, “pet forums.” Or “small business forums.”
There is one important caveat to getting free traffic from posting on forums.
It won’t work unless you’re an active poster. That means you have to commit to posting on forums at least several times a week. I generally spend about 15-20 minutes a day posting on forums.
One last thing, unless you don’t have anything better to do with your time, don’t fall into the trap of treating Forums like an all-day chatroom like so many forum members do. Make your post and leave.
After all, you have a business to run, right?

So I am trying to gain more traffic as college student. I don’t have a lot of time to spend on trying to gain traffic or really any money to do so. I have been posting on forums and such, but it really isn’t working. I would just like to get some more traffic and I would like to know if anyone had any tips. Please help me out.

I was facing the same problem and someone gave me excellent advice… he said this is a "Contact Sport."
Also I learned that those "pay for someone to post on many search engine" things don’t work anymore. Don’t waste your money on that.
I had a good leap in traffic when I recommended it myself on "Submbleupon" … but I have a website that people do find quite valuable.

This website is great for web advertising. It’s a free targeted advertising (based on you selecting various categories you would like to be included in) and link exchange network. You put other websites text ads on your page and yours appears on others. And it really is 100% free, forever. While it’s not something that guarantees traffic it also doesn’t cost anything, so why not try it?

Increasing traffic without spending time or money? I’d dare say thats impossible, as usually increasing web traffic will usually take up a little of one or the other, and sometimes both.
If your tring to do it for free, theres no shortcut as the alternative means spending significant amounts of time publicising your website in directories, submitting it to toplists, link exchanges and the alike.
The best you can do is to be clever about where you advertise your site. Think of sites or places which already have high levels of traffic and attempt to get listings there.
