After reviewing a myriad of artist demos, press kits and bios as a former talent booking agent with the William Morris Agency and founder of ReelMusician.com, I’ve decided to write a short article on how you can formulate a workable and eye catching artist bio avoiding too much hype and grabbing the attention of the music industry. As the years have gone by and technology has increased, you would think that bios, press kits and other various articles written for an artist press kit would get better – I believe it has gotten easier, but better I’m still debating. There are fundamental truths and principles that you should incorporate into your press kit material if you really want to catch the eye of the industry professional and land some real success.
There are not as many fast or absolute rules as there are don’ts when creating your artist bio. I can tell you from experience, that the creation of an artist press kit is not as easy as one would think. Anyone can have their friend or another member of the act put together a press kit, but one that really sparkles and grabs the attention of your audience is the key – Not just creating what everyone else is creating. Believe it or not, I tend to think that many industry execs don’t even bother with the run of the mill artist press kits with CD’s sent in with the barrage of mail received on a daily basis. Unfortunately, there are probably some very deserving bands in the pile, but if you don’t catch their attention or are not conducting a polished approach to your material, then you can forget it – incredible reel or not.
As we go along here, don’t hesitate to contact ReelMusician.com should you have any questions on artist press kit design. Many articles, features, logo design work and free material are available there as well as the opportunity to have their staff professionally design and write your artist press kit material. To Begin with, there are scores of different ways to press kit layout. It is highly recommended that you have your folders professionally printed with your logo, etc and not adopt the gloss black folder that everyone is using. I understand that money doesn’t grow on trees, and if you are cash tight, then you might consider an off color other than black such as blue, yellow red, or variations, etc. Starting with that idea, let’s look at logo design. Do you or your band currently have a logo? – If not you should. Logos are becoming increasingly important in defining the act nowadays. Logos also help to set the mood for the tone of who you or your band is. Logo designs are fairly inexpensive and software is out there that is a great help in achieving some very professional designs. Your logo ought to be printed on the front of virtually everything your name is on – From the press kit cover, CD cover, bio, etc.
When looking at the creation of your bio, it almost seems a daunting task, to get the flavor and tone right and the pitch verbalized in such a way where you are articulate, provide a foundation of telling your reading audience why they should look further into your act, and do it in such a way as to not turn off your readers. This is a common thread among those who are serious about a powerful press kit and not just throwing it together to have something to send out. Let me assure you that if you will implement a few of these ideas and then for further reading and ideas at the ReelMusician.com website, that you will be well on your way to creating quality, eye-catching promo kits.
As a matter of practice, start reading as much material as you can, whether on line or hard copy, gleaning writing ideas tips and artistical direction that you find in the mainstream artist write-ups. I will tell you that because of mere position and the presence of record deals, that you will find it a little more difficult to write your bio. It’s a much easier task when you can talk about major play dates with top 40 acts, or your own singles released, etc then when you are first starting out – I am well aware of that. That’s why I recommend professionally written bio’s on the front end of your career. Professional writers who write bios and press kits tend to have a better feel for how to address certain inadequacies with solid writing material then most artists or band members. When you are in the business to write and make someone look good in print, with little name recognition to none, you get a feel and get good at choice verbiage.
So what should you include in your artist bio? Include name of act at top in bold – don’t be so artsy fartsy that individuals can’t make out the name or the main body of the bio for that matter. Include important play dates, singles released, significant air play (chart number) and where, band members and anything about any player that exudes credentials. Be sure to include future release dates, any solid future bookings, your artist manager if they have credible acts that substantiate your credibility, length of band being together, if longer than a year, and music genre. Don’t spend a lot of time picking apart the music style and don’t include that you were the high school choir president and any other non-consequential type of information. It’s better to have a shorter bio, than to stretch it out with information that nobody gives a darn about. The fact that you came from a certain town or region, may be important for certain unknown reasons here, but if not, don’t include it. Don’t include the local fundraiser that you played at if it’s not a fairly significant regional show. You get the idea – Don’t include something that you think the reader might read and say, “So what.”
In closing, and so much more could be written here, but for the sake of time and length of this article, I will leave you with that less is more, don’t use the same old tired color of folders, and be aware of what’s truly important when writing your artist bio. Let your creativity be shrouded in user readability, without using a lot of unneeded or unhelpful hype that detracts rather than supports or emphasizes and start looking at many press releases and bios to gather ideas.

If you have a good appetite and a way with words, food writing may be a career option to consider. Not only is doing research for food writing one of the more enjoyable tasks in freelance writing, but you’ll never be short of restaurant recommendations and potential free meals — though you may run short of well-fitting pants.
To become a successful freelance food writer, you’ll need to know how to describe food well. The key to description, at least in traditional literature, is to make focused, concrete comparisons. To see why, ask yourself which sentence you find more appealing: “It was the tastiest shrimp I’ve ever eaten,” or “The lime-pressed garlic shrimp, grilled over applewood, had a texture between the crunch of caramelized sugar and the soft resistance of a medium-rare salmon filet”?
The fundamental law of food writing is to make your reader wish that he or she had some of whatever delicious dish you’re writing about, to make the reader personally invested in the food. And there’s a strange quirk in the human mind: whenever we think about an object or activity, we activate the parts of our brain that turn on whenever we’re interacting with that object or engaged in that activity. In other words: if we think about throwing a baseball, the nerves in our arm twitch. Or, if we think about eating a thick steak, our stomach grumbles and our mouth waters. When you’re writing about food, you want to activate those same parts of the brain to make your reader feel that he or she is sharing in the experience of eating it. Words like “tasty,” “delicious,” or, worst of all, “really good,” won’t do anything for your reader’s emotions. Only words related to food — or words and images with strong emotional connotations — will really get your readers’ mouths watering.
Once you’ve written your articles, where do you market your food writing? If you live in a large city, you can write for a local newspaper or an alternative paper (i.e. the LA Weekly, the Austin Chronicle, etc.). Millions of people read these papers daily or weekly, and a good portion of those millions read the food section. When anyone in a major city needs to make restaurant reservations for a date, business dinner, party, or other social engagement, they look in the food section of the local paper for hot new restaurant reviews. Stay on top of restaurant openings and closings in your city. New restaurant openings can be your “bread and butter.” Local newspapers and online city guides are always wanting to print new restaurant reviews.
If you have a favorite local hangout that not many people know about, write an article on it. Submit your article with a proper query letter to a local newspaper. You might be the first one to write about the place, throwing needed business their way. In the end, you collect a decent paycheck from the newspaper, along with a published clip, a byline, and hopefully more work and referrals.
Another option is to write for magazines dedicated to food, dining, city nightlife, general lifestyles, or for the tourist market. If you plan to write for magazines, your choice of what to write about becomes much broader. You can write how-to articles, interview pieces, cookware reviews, and so on. If you plan to write for local tourism guides, your best bet is to write restaurant reviews. Tourists may not know about any of the well-known restaurants or diners in the area. Tourism guides provide insight and guidance to what’s hot and what’s not in the area. This means that there’s a steady flow of potential readers for your restaurant reviews and other food writing.
If you don’t live in a large city, it’s much more difficult to become a food writer. The mom n’ pop cafe downtown may have some of the best omelets you’ve ever tasted, but how are you supposed to sell an article if everyone in town already eats at that cafe every Friday night? Consider selling your articles to regional magazines. The Department of Transportation in several US states often publishes a monthly magazine about regional news. The editors of these magazines often look at local restaurant reviews as a source of human interest, or a way of boosting out-of-state tourism to non-traditional destinations.
Additionally, you might try writing sample copy for cookbooks, press releases for food suppliers, or ads for food companies. Companies and book publishers hire good food writers to help market anything from new varieties of pasta sauce to gourmet steak dishes. Even a nearby supermarket might be willing to pay for copy in weekly ad flyers.
Unfortunately for rural types, full-time food writing is more often than not an urban game. For urban types, food is one of the products that won’t ever stop being popular, especially when it’s offered as part of a good restaurant experience. Thus food writing means job security, and more importantly than that: it’s just outright enjoyable writing. So get to it!

Traffic is the soul to any online business, including the recent trend, the blogs. If you imagine it this way:
You have a business in a mall. Customers find information about your business through coupons. Customers come to the mall and go into your business. They look around and decide if they should purchase or not.
The concept is the same with any online business.
You have a website. Visitors (traffic) find information about your website through advertisements. Visitors search on search engines, find your website and click to your website. They look around and decide if they should purchase or not.
If you compare two together:
Online Business vs. Offline Business
Traffic = Customers
Online Ads = Coupons
Search Engines = Mall
Website = Storefront
No traffic to a website is the same as no customers coming into the mall.
No traffic / No Customers = No Sales in both cases.
Blog-driven websites are becoming more and more popular. If you have a blog, pay attention to the tips below: (not in particular order)
1. Choosing the right platform, domain, and internal tagging (categories)
CMS (short for Content Management System) is a computer application used to create, edit, manage, and publish content in a consistently organized fasion. A Blog is a CMS application. The right blog software can make a huge difference. If you use blogger or wordpress templates, make sure they are designed with search engine optimized in mind.
Domain should be carefully thought through before going for it. A domain is not just an URL. A domain represents your brand! It should be unique and easy for people to mention to each other. Don’t make it too hard to pronounce. Ideally a domain should have the most important keyword about your business in it, and it should be no longer than 20 characters. You should also always aim for dotcom domains first, simply because “dotcom” is more well known compared to dotnet, dotorg…etc.
Proper internal tagging is very important for both search engines and users. Internal tagging enables search engines to better crawl the various content within your website. Internal tagging also allows users to navigate your website a lot easier, as they can just choose and display certain categories of their interest.
2. Write Title Tags and Content with both Search Engine and Visitors in mind
Search Engine is all about relevancy. The more targeted keywords you have in your content the higher you will rank in search engine results for these targeted keywords. Title tags and content should have your targeted keywords in them. The more the better, but avoid spamming. This is why you should also write with visitors in mind. If you mention too much of the same words, it’s actually quite annoying. Write with honesty and provide quality content to the best of your ability.
3. Proper bolding and underlying
Your writing has to please your readers. Don’t make your font too small to read. Use proper bolding and underlying to help readers read more efficiently.
4. Use more than just Text
This is self-explanatory. You will see popular blogs or websites make good use of graphics, audios, and videos, just to remove the boredom of plain text.
5. Pay attention to your site stats and focus on topics that’s popular and needs attention
If you pay attention to the traffic logs of your site, you will be able to tell which posts and topics that your audiences like the best. If you find posts and topics that draw the most traffic, they are probably what people are looking for. If you focus on these topics you will be fulfilling people’s needs, thus, increasing your readership and building your authority in these topics. Of course if would be even better if these topics lie around your targeted keywords.
6. Invite Guest Bloggers / Posts
It’s a good practice to invite guest bloggers to post on your blogs. This will improve the variety of the content on your site. Of course, these guest posts should be relevant to your site.
7. Implement Search Feature
I can’t tell you how important the search box feature is to a website, especially for blogs with hundreds of archived posts. These archived posts may still be valuable to your visitors. By implementing a search feature on your website you are connecting related content with respect to your visitors’ demands / needs.
8. Participate in Social Media, Forums, Blogs and Article Directories
Most social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, can allow you to automatically update content to your profile with your blog’s RSS / Atom feeds. These Social Media, if used properly, can bring you tremendous amount of traffic.
Participating in Forums and blogs related to your niche will help building up your authority and your voice in your niche. Not only that, you will also get backlinks to your website if you have your website URL in your signature. Also, a lot of people on these forums and blogs will click on your signature URL out of curiosity. Same effects can be achieved with submitting articles to article directories.
9. Include Keywords in your Links
A lot of people only include their direct website URLs in their links. This is a simple mistake that most people make which dramatically reduces the quality of their backlinks. As previously mentioned, search engines are all about relevancy. The quality of a backlink depends on the relevancy between the linking text of the backlink, the title and the content of the website. If your website is about travel (targeted keyword), make sure the keyword “travel” is mentioned in the linking text.
10. Building your Brand
Your brand is like the purpose of your blog. Your readers share the same purpose as you and their loyalty are built based on their level of comfort with your brand. Sticking to your brand is very important as you will be consistently building up your authority and voice within your brand, your community. Your readers follow your brand, and you want loyal, quality, and focused readers.
You can, of course, diversify your website but it takes a lot more work and dedication to build up authority in multiple areas. It also takes a lot of work from the search engine optimization point of view since the relevancy of all the content on your website dramatically changes.
If you already have a solid readers to your existing brand, introducing a completely new subject can be off putting for them.

Recently one of my readers wrote to me and asked:
“I make marketing materials for small businesses. I’d like to write a few articles about the positive side of using these materials for promoting your business but it seems all the articles are written already. How do I write an article without people thinking I ’stole’ the content from another author? Thanks, Kelli”
This is a great question that many of people face when they try to get into article marketing. The fact that people are writing on the topic is actually good news because, in this case, it means you have a business in a thriving industry. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t stand apart from the others.
Just like when you’re establishing your online presence and developing your product, you needed to determine what made you unique and set you apart from your competition. We call this your USP…or unique selling proposition. You can do the same with your articles.
It’s true that some or many of your ideas will have already been published in articles, but that’s because they are tried and true methods of promoting a business. Just because you have the same idea as someone else, does not mean than you copied them…and if you’re putting your ideas in your own words, there is no copyright violation. You also have your own voice and as you write more and more, you’ll develop that unique voice.
Still, I understand that you want true original content. One way to stand apart from other articles is to go the extra mile in explaining your points. Flesh out articles with concrete examples, case studies and other things that make it easier for your reader to really understand and apply the knowledge you’re providing.
I’ve written articles on plenty of subjects that have been written on thousands of times. I occasionally search article databases for ideas to incorporate into my articles, but mostly I just sit down and right from my own knowledge and experiences, creating a unique perspective on the subject. You’ll probably want to try the same.
As far as people thinking you “stole” their content, there are always people feel like that. They live in constant fear of someone taking something from them and in an almost paranoid way, they think everyone is copying them no matter what it is. This is minimalist thinking and don’t let yourself become a part of it. Ideas are a dime a dozen, but what’s important is what you do with those ideas. Rise above and write the best, most informative articles that you can.

“Content is king ” so they say and writing your own articles is one of the most popular ways of advertising your website/blog as well as its products & services and are used regularly by internet marketers.
6 tips to get your articles read.
1) Use short paragraphs.
Paragraphs can be just a single sentence.
2) Make note of each point using numbers and bullets which will help to emphasize your points and make them easy to remember.
3) Use Sub-headings to sub-divide your paragraphs on the page. Doing this will break each point into sections and make it easier to read.
4) Create a well worded and attention grabbing headline or title. If your headline/title can get your readers attention and spark their curiosity you’re already halfway there.
5) Keep them interested from the start to the finish. From your opening paragraph use good descriptive words and metaphors.
6) Use specific facts and figures when necessary as they will heighten your articles impact. If you use a keyword suggestion tool such as Yahoo Search Marketing, you will see that millions of searches are done for a certain keyword.
When these keywords are typed into a search engine the websites containing articles with those keywords will be displayed; which improves the chances of your article being found by interested readers.
4 Benefits writing articles can bring to your internet business.
1. It’s absolutely free. All you need to do is craft a well worded and informative article using the 6 tips from the previous page.
2. Your website will be noticed by search engines in a short period of time after submitting to popular article directories. Try submitting 10 articles to 10 different directories and you should then get results after a few weeks.
3. You will obtain back links automatically.
Submit your articles to directories, make sure that you include a resource box at the bottom of your article which has a direct link (hyperlink) to your site, your copyright info and allow people to give away your article; other websites will make use of your article and then you will attract more traffic to your website.
4. They will help to build up your online reputation as an Internet marketer and show that you are knowledgeable in your field.
The website traffic that they will produce will eventually convert to sales.
The 4 essential ingredients of a great article.
Articles are an excellent way to market your internet business. They are a very successful way to drive traffic into one’s website.
Website owners should include articles in their site as they are a key part in making a site work and will bring you many benefits as well as creating a profit.
Articles are a major factor in bringing high rankings with search engines.
The higher the website ranking the greater the incoming traffic flow; which means increased profits and the potential for future sales & marketing projects.
These articles must be well written and interesting to your readers which should keep them coming back for more as well as make it likely that they will pass on your articles or to recommend your site to other people.
The four essential ingredients of a great article are:
1 Keywords and Keyword Phrases.
Articles should always be concentrated on keywords and keyword phrases. When a visitor goes to your website they are usually looking for specific information on a particular subject.
A searcher usually goes to a search engine (Google/Yahoo etc) and types in the keywords they are looking for. The important point is to write an article that has keywords that are related to your site.
There are many free tools available on the internet that will provide this service.
NicheBot
GoodKeywords
Make good use of these tools to find which keywords to use and what subject to write about.
2 Keyword Density.
Use your keywords and keyword phrases fully when writing your article.
Keyword density is the number of times a keyword or keyword phrase is used.
An article must contain good keyword density for a search engine to detect its presence. That density should be neither too high nor too low; if it is high the spirit of the article is lost and may put off your reader as well as the search engines. A low number may be ignored by the search engines.
They should have at least ten to fifteen percent of keyword density in their content to rank highly. This number varies depending on the number of words used in the article.
KeywordDensity
3 Good Article Content.
You cannot just pack an article with keywords.
Articles must entertain as well as provide good content; they should be well written with correct spelling and grammar. Make sure that your work includes accurate facts and figures, is well written and thought out.
A well written article will boost your reputation in your field or topic .
4 Linking Articles.
An important point to remember is if you are going to submit articles to ezines and newsletters and other sites don’t forget to include a link to your site.
Always include your name and company info in the resource box with a brief description of your site and its link and it should always be placed right at the base of your article. If people like what they have read they will be likely to click on the link directing them to your site.
What makes a good resource box?
There is only a small space for your resource box so you need to make the most of it, if used cleverly it will supply you with significant traffic to your site which should be regarded as potential customers.
Many websites allow articles to be placed on their site because they can make use of the articles to fill their pages with useful info.
Use the keyword links above to find the proper niche keywords that people are mostly searching for.
Be creative and catch the attention of your reader with the right content, realise how important a well constructed resource box can be in making people click on your link and be directed to your site.
I hope you have found this article informative, you may pass it on to others or place it on your website, as long as the links and this resource box remain intact.

i do NOT want to use my name
It would be best not to use your name. If you are writing the release it will seem less credible. Depending on the business type, there is no reason to use your name. You should focus on the business, it’s services and benefits, location, contact info..etc.
